West Pokot Partners with Ireland to Boost Climate Action, Peace, and Youth Empowerment
H.E Simon Kachapin has received a high-level delegation from the Embassy and Government of Ireland, led by H.E. Neale Richmond, Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, and Ireland’s Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Caitríona Ingoldsby. The visit aims to bolster partnerships and advance discussions on climate action and peace-building in the region.
A key highlight of the visit was a technical engagement on the Powering Peace through Climate Action (PPCA) project, an initiative funded by Irish Aid and implemented by International Alert. The project seeks to leverage climate action as a tool for fostering dialogue and reconciliation among communities affected by conflict, underscoring Ireland’s commitment to sustainable peacebuilding in West Pokot.
The delegation is set to visit Nasokol and Ortum to assess the Young Innovators Programme, which supports youth-led initiatives in technology and entrepreneurship. They will also proceed to Masol to evaluate ongoing climate resilience programs aimed at addressing resource-based conflicts.
H.E. Neale Richmond, Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, noted that the Irish government remains committed to improving education, promoting education and climate resilience in West Pokot County.
Speaking during the visit, Governor Kachapin lauded Ireland’s long-standing support for West Pokot, emphasizing the strong political and diplomatic ties between the two regions.
“We have had a long and cordial relationship with Ireland, and their support in climate change resilience, peace efforts, and education has been instrumental. Limited resources have often led to conflicts, which is why we are investing in sustainable solutions. The Young Innovators Programme at Nasokol and Ortum Boys is one such initiative that is equipping our youth with skills to drive change,” said Governor Kachapin.
He further expressed gratitude to the Embassy and Government of Ireland for their continued partnership, noting that these investments are transforming mindsets and empowering young people to take charge of their future.
