Protecting Livestock Securing Livelihoods: West Pokot Rolls Out Lumpy Skin Disease Vaccination Drive

The County Government of West Pokot, through its Department of Agriculture and Livestock, has initiated a vaccination campaign to protect livestock against Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in Kanyarkwat Location, Riwo Ward.
This disease, which affects cattle, causes skin nodules, fever, and can lead to reduced milk production, weight loss, and even death in severe cases. LSD poses a significant threat to livestock health and the livelihoods of pastoral communities in the region.
During the exercise, CECM for Agriculture and Livestock, Mr. Wilfred Longronyang, encouraged residents to bring their livestock for vaccination, emphasizing the county government’s commitment to supporting livestock farmers and ensuring their herds remain healthy. He assured residents that officers from the department's veterinary section are fully mobilized to reach as many animals as possible in affected and at-risk areas.
This proactive vaccination exercise is part of a broader strategy by the county to combat livestock diseases, reduce economic losses for farmers, and promote sustainable livestock farming. With measures like routine surveillance and community awareness, the County Government of West Pokot aims to enhance disease prevention and strengthen animal health across the region.
