The Wei-Wei River Catchment Restoration Project team led by the Team Leader of ARS Progetti

Implementing partner of Italian Cooperation, Giuseppe De Bac planted 1000 tree seedlings at Paroo Mixed Secondary school in Wei-Wei Ward.

 

Weiwei River Catchment Restoration Project has so far planted approximately 17,000 trees with tree seedlings ranging from gravelia, Bamboo and macamia planted in the area. The seedlings are locally sourced from Paroo tree nursery, which the project helped develop as a source of income for the local community as the nursery is managed by members of the local community.

The exercise saw students and teachers led by Deputy Principal Kennedy Odidi plant the tree seedlings along the school fence and other designated plots in the school compound.

Paroo mixed secondary school has active environmental and scouting clubs that champion for environmental conservation through planting trees which encouraged Giuseppe De Bac and his team to engage the school in the conservation exercise.

Speaking during the exercise, County senior forester, Kennedy Pkew emphasized on the importance of investing in trees terming it a long-term investment, especially in mitigating the climate change crisis where the county government is highly investing in through the Department of Water and natural resources.

On his part, Giuseppe De Bac applauded the school's effort in the conservation initiatives and promised to continue to work with the school and the local community in the restoration efforts.

In attendance were Salvatore Correddu of Saving Forest, Nancy-field officer of Wei-Wei catchment restoration project and Joseph Loluk of Paroo Tree Nursery.
