Governor Kachapin Opens West Pokot Annual Agricultural Show, Urges Farmers to Embrace Climate-Smart Agriculture

Governor Simon Kachapin presided over this year’s West Pokot County Annual Agricultural Show and Trade Fair at Kishaunet Showground, under the theme "Promoting Climate-Smart Agriculture and Trade Initiatives for Sustainable Economic Growth." The event emphasized the importance of adopting climate-smart agricultural practices to ensure sustainable development.

In his address, Governor Kachapin highlighted the critical role of agriculture in the county's economy, urging farmers to adopt modern technologies to boost productivity and sustainability. He also commended West Pokot for consistently hosting the event despite limited resources, noting that agriculture remains the backbone of the county’s economy.

"We must find ways to make agriculture sustainable and contribute to our county's economic growth," the governor stated. He also emphasized the county's efforts in value addition and food security through recent partnerships, such as collaborations with Kenya Seed for seed distribution and livestock programs that have supplied Galla goats and Dorper sheep to farmers across nine wards.

Governor Kachapin also raised concerns about delays in funding from the National Treasury, which he said are hindering county operations. "For three months, counties have not received funds from the exchequer. This delay is stalling devolution, and we urge the national government to expedite the process," he urged.

West Pokot County Assembly Speaker Fredrick Kaptui encouraged farmers to diversify into cash crop farming to mitigate risks and improve returns. He noted that diversification on small plots could help reduce losses associated with over-reliance on perennial crops.

CEC for Agriculture Wilfred Long’ironyang emphasized that the annual agricultural show offers farmers an opportunity to learn new technologies that can help them adapt to climate challenges.

The event was attended by numerous county leaders, including Majority Leader Martin Komongiro, various CECs, chief officers, and other officials, signaling a strong commitment to advancing agriculture and trade for sustainable growth in West Pokot.

The focus on climate-smart agriculture and technological innovation highlights the county’s dedication to enhancing food security and driving economic development.
