CS Moe Inspects Key Development Projects in Lomut and Weiwei Wards
The Cabinet Secretary for East Africa, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL), and Regional Development, Hon. Beatrice Askul Moe, conducted an in-depth inspection of critical development projects in Lomut and Weiwei Wards, West Pokot County. The visit aimed to assess the impact of these initiatives on the local communities.
Among the flagship projects is the Lomut Irrigation Project Extension, valued at Ksh. 80 million, which is set to benefit over 3,000 farmers. The initiative will enable local farmers to cultivate a variety of crops including maize, green grams, sorghum, bananas, and beans, generating an estimated annual income of Ksh. 200,000 per acre.
CS Moe highlighted that these projects are part of the national government's BETA Plan, which seeks to enhance food security and support marginalized regions like West Pokot. She also announced an additional Ksh. 40 million for the rehabilitation of the Weiwei Irrigation Project, while cautioning against the vandalism of public assets.
“As President Ruto pledged, we are dedicated to strengthening food security. These projects are not just about irrigation; they are about securing livelihoods and building resilience in our communities,” CS Moe remarked.
Deputy Governor H.E Robert Komolle emphasized the long-term benefits of the projects, stating, “These initiatives will leave a lasting legacy in Sigor and Lomut. Through agriculture, we are not just feeding our people but fostering peaceful collaboration among border communities.”
Sigor MP Peter Lochakapong also lauded the initiatives, acknowledging the crucial role of the Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA) in partnering with the people of West Pokot to unlock the region’s agricultural potential.
The delegation also toured the Sangat water intake and inspected ongoing irrigation works in Weiwei, Sigor, under the management of KVDA.
Other dignitaries present included KVDA Managing Director Sammy Naporos, Senator Julius Murgor, MPs Samuel Moroto and Rael Aleutum, former Governor Prof. John Lonyangapuo, representatives from the Presidential Delivery Unit, and local MCAs, including David Moiben, Jacob Toung'ole (Lomut), and Wilson Chekeruk (Masol Ward).
