Chief Officer Soprin Receives Essential Items to Boost Maternal Health Services

The Chief Officer for Health and Sanitation, Nelly Soprin, received essential supplies under the Mama Kits Initiative, aimed at improving maternal health in West Pokot County. This initiative is supported through a partnership between Action Against Hunger (ACF) and Global Affairs Canada (GAC).
The distributed items will benefit several health facilities, including Simbol, Onoch, Mbara, Kanyerus, Losam, and Kiwawa dispensaries, along with Alale Health Center and Kangoletiang Dispensary. These facilities are located in Central Pokot, Kacheliba, and Pokot North sub-counties.
The Mama Kits Initiative is part of ongoing efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality in Kenya.
West Pokot has made progress in improving health outcomes, especially by increasing the number of births attended by skilled health professionals. However, according to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS), only 65% of births in West Pokot are attended by skilled providers, compared to the national average of 89%.
Despite these challenges, the County Government of West Pokot remains dedicated to improving maternal health services, aligning with national policies that emphasize skilled birth attendance. Initiatives like the Mama Kits play a critical role in bridging the gap and ensuring safer deliveries for mothers and infants in West Pokot County.
